Weekly Eagle News
Saturday, December 16 -- At the Viking Relays, the Jamestown indoor track team has a decent performance to start off their indoor track season. The boys' 4x800 team places 3rd with a a time of 8:52.

Wednesday, December 13 -- Jamestown will participate in its first indoor meet this Saturday in the Viking Relays at the Arthur Ashe Center in Richmond.

Saturday, November 11 -- The Jamestown boys fell just short in pulling off the upset in their quest for state championship by losing to the #18 nationally ranked and #1 team in the state of VA (A,AA,AAA), Western Albermarle by 2 points (91-93). Surprisingly, the Jamestown boys performed well with a not so stellar performance from their #1 runner and star, junior Bryce Ruiz. Ruiz who for the past week had been bothered by a calf injury and hadn't run that much so therefore was not at top shape, went after 2 time defending champion Bobby Lockhart for the first mile then held onto 3rd place at the 2 mile mark, but then hit the wall at 2.5 mile mark and let 10 people him in that span leading to a 13th place finish with a time of 16:38. Jamestown junior Tony Davila just missed out on cracking the top 15 All-State by placing 17th in a time of 16:53. Western Albermarle was able to place their top 2 runners (Charlie Hurt, 8th, 16:18 and Phillip Dejong, 9th, 16:20) ahead of Jamestown's #1, but Jamestown was able to beat Western Albermarle with runners #3 through #5. Jamestown sophomore Brandon Miles placed 3rd for the team and 28th overall in the race with a time of 17:07, beating Western Albermarle's #3 (Owen Morrison, 32nd, 17:11). One place and 2 seconds behind Miles was Jamestown's #4, senior Jeff Magner who ran 17:09 for 29th place in which he also beat Western's #3. Jamestown's 5th man was junior Phillip Cooke who placed 35th in a time of 17:17, beating Western Albermarle's #5 by 2 seconds (Peter Burch, 37th, 17:19). The Jamestown girls improved on their performance last year at the state meet by placing 10th with a score of 256) and by beating rival Lafayette (11th, 272) who had previously beat the Lady Eagles at the district and regional meets the previous weeks. Chrissie Rich closed out her senior year in style by placing 11th in a time of 19:50 and being All-State. Additional news, Bryce Ruiz found out the day after the state meet that he had been running with a broken fibula since the week leading up to states, so therefore he will not be running at Foot Locker South and hopefully will be back by indoor state time.

2000 XC Season Summary

This season was a great success for our boys cross country team. I really can not think of a team that put as much effort into this season than any other team in the state. It all started back in mid June when a group of about 7 guys or so began training together. Instead of like most normal teenagers who sleep in till noon during the summer these guys got up at 6 every morning to go run together. These guys put in a lot of time, work, and mileage over the summer. Then once school started, the Jamestown guys would get up at 5 every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday to go lift and run. We came into this year way behind the likes of Lafayette and Western Albermarle in terms of talent, but through the dedication and determination of the Jamestown guys to excel and improve led to the victory over a much more talented Lafayette squad and the near upset over the national powerhouse of Western Albermarle. I'd like to personally thank the coaches who taught us many things this season, not just about running, but about being a better person. To the parents, you guys traveled as south as Charlotte with us and as North as Philadelphia, your support is just incredible. To the team, being apart of this squad this season has probably been one of the greatest experiences of my life, its been fun. In the Jamestown boys' cross country teams short 4 year existence it has gone from regional qualifier ('97) to 4th place finisher at state meet ('98) to 3rd place finisher at state meet ('99) to the more recent, 2nd place finisher ('00). Will the trend continue next year? We shall see...
