'00 Bay Rivers District Meet

10/27/00

Newport News Park 5K course

Newport News, VA

Friday, October 27 -- At the Bay Rivers district meet today, the Jamestown boys cross country team beat their hated rival and defending Bay Rivers District champ Lafayette by 25 points for the district title and Jamestown junior Bryce Ruiz made sure that there wouldn't be another Allen Carr upset this year by beating Carr by 12 seconds for the district individual title. The Eagles beat the Rams 35-60, they almost doubled the score on the Rams. Jamestown was able to place their top 5 in the top 12 and top 6 in the top 16. The team had a top 5 average of 16:32. Bryce Ruiz led the Eagles quest to championship glory by beating rival Allen Carr of York HS by 12 seconds. Ruiz's time of 15:26 was the second faster time ever ran on the course. Only Senecca Lassiter has ran faster with the course record of 15:15. Carr, still ran a great time of 15:38. Then there was a fight for 3rd between Jimmy Kohlman and Preston Wall of Lafayette and Brandon Miles of Jamestown. After a great amount of runners went out fast with around 5 flat and sub 5 first mile clockings, these 3 runners emerged as the leaders of this pack by the 2 mile mark. As they came out of the woods with 400 meters to go, Kohlman and Wall lead Miles by a couple of strides. As they made the final turn for the last 100 meters though, Miles caught up to the two Lafayette runners and the three runners all showed a great amount of guts as they really kicked it hard in, not giving into the other. The finish was a near leaning finish with Kohlman coming in 3rd in 16:29, Wall 4th 16:30, and Miles 5th 16:30. Tony Davila placed 8th for Jamestown in a time of 16:41, and really ran an impressive race with the fact that he was able to recover after falling midway during the race. Jeff Magner was not far behind Davila placing 9th in a time of 16:46. The nail in the coffin though, to wrap up the district title, was Phillip Cooke's race. Cooke (Jamestown #5 runner) placed 12th in a time of 17:16, coming one place and 6 seconds ahead of Lafayette's #3 runner, Andrew Kuhn. Also Brian Phipps just barely missed cracking the all district top 15, with 17:28 16th placing. Though his race showed that Jamestown is 6 strong deep, with Phipps not far behind Lafayette's #3 and way ahead of their #4. The Jamestown girls were able to advance to the Region I Meet, with a 3rd place finish of 79 points. The Lady Eagles were led by senior Chrissie Rich who placed 3rd in a time of 19:52. Other Lady Eagles that made the All-District Top 15 were Grace Zamora (9th, 20:56) and Marisa Westmoreland (11th, 21:00). The boys team will be looking to run ever better and distance themselves even more from Lafayette and the girls team will be looking to advance to the state meet this Thursday at regionals which is held at the Eastern State Hospital course.
