'00 Great American Cross Country Festival

9/23/00

McAlpine Greenway Park 5K Course

Charlotte, NC

Saturday, September 23 -- Jamestown suffers a setback and runs poorly at the Great American Cross Country Festival in Charlotte, NC. The team was not prepared to race and therefore came out with poor times. The race time was delayed from 10:45 AM to 5:50 PM due to heavy rain the previous day that flooded the course. They had to slightly change the course due to sewage around the starting line. The huge mistake by the team was eating heavily only a couple of hours before race time. The course had some very muddy parts and weather conditions were very humid. The team scored 277 points and placed 8th out of 27 of the top small schools in the country. A positive note was Jamestown coming ahead of Louisa County (VA) who placed 9th. Last year Jamestown came in 3rd at the AA State Meet just ahead of Louisa who was in 4th by just 1 point. Bryce Ruiz led the way with a long list of sub par performances by Jamestown runners with a 4th place finish in a time of 15:57.6. The lone exceptional race by a Jamestown runner was by Tony Davilla, who ran a time of 17:05.0 for 25th place. Brandon Miles ran a poor race with a time of 17:46.6 for 59th place. Jeff Magner was ahead of Miles past the 1.5 mile mark, but fell and lost a lot of time and ended up in 85th with a time of 18:15. Other Jamestown runners times...Ricky Rehkopf (104th) 18:31.2, Wyatt Beyer (110) 18:44.1, and Phillip Cooke (137th) 19:31.2.
