Eastern State Hospital 3.05 mile course

Williamsburg, VA

Thursday, November 2 -- At the Region I meet, hosted by the Jamestown cross country team on Eastern State Hospital's 3.05 mile course in Williamsburg, VA, the Jamestown boys gained their second Region I title in three years and the girls advanced to the state meet for the third consecutive year with a third place finish. The Jamestown boys beat cross town rival and defending Region I champions, Lafayette by 42 points. The Eagle boys were able to place their entire top 5 in the top 15 with all of them earning All-Region individual honors. The Eagles were led by junior Bryce Ruiz who defended his Region I individual title with a time of 15:03, beating his old rival, Allen Carr of York HS by 16 seconds (15:19). "I just went out and tried pushing the race," Ruiz said. "This is my home course, so I know every inch of it. I just made a surge in the middle of the race and around the curves." Ruiz broke the previous course record set by Senecca Lassiter of 15:05 in 1994. Lassiter ran for Lafayette HS and went on to be an All-American 1500 M runner at the University of Arkansas and is now one of the top 1500/mile runners in not only the nation, but the world. Jamestown coach Ed Boyd was proud of his boys team, not just Ruiz. The Jamestown boys used a 42 second "pack" time between the 2 and 5 runners to control the race. "Today they came out and wanted to dominate," Boyd said. "They wanted to come out and play. They really wanted this. (Bryce) ran a good race today. He looked tough. He looked scary tough." After a subpar district race, Jamestown junior Tony Davila ran strong at regionals, placing 4th in a time of 16:07. A good example of the team running as a pack was the 7th and 8th place finish of Jamestown senior Jeff Magner (16:23) and sophomore Brandon Miles (16:24). The biggest and most pleasant surprise was the race of Jamestown's #5 runner, junior Phillip Cooke. He was able to place in the top 15 and make All-Region with a time of 16:49. Jamestown senior Brian Phipps showed that his team is 6 runners deep in quality runners with a 20th place finish with a time of 17:09. Closing out the Jamestown boys top 7 was sophomore Ricky Rehkopf with a time of 17:36. The Jamestown girls improved on their 4th place finish last year at the regional meet by placing 3rd this year with 77 points. The Grafton girls won the meet with 59 points, with the Lafayette girls not too far behind them as runners-up with 65 points. Jamestown, with senior Chrissie Rich (19:34) running the fastest time of all Bay Rivers runners, put two in the top 15. Along with Rich, Jamestown junior Grace Zamora came in 13th place with a time of 20:37.
